ZTE Axon M full review

ZTE Axon M with foldable dual-screen is now official

Not too long ago, the Android ecosystem was experiencing a saturation point. There was a complete lack of new concepts emerging which was making Android boring. Then came the infinity concept and almost all the major smartphone manufacturers now are making smartphones with 18:9 aspect ratios to keep things interesting for the buyers. ZTE, on the other hand, had some other plans in mind to keep the Android Updated. The new ZTE Axon M is nothing short of something new.

While foldable smartphones are not a new thing, the ZTE Axon M for sure is. The smartphone features a dual touchscreen which can be folded and unfolded as required.

That being said, is the foldable smartphone concept is the new must-have for Android smartphones or is it just a gimmick? Let’s find out in our review of the ZTE Axon M.

ZTE Axon M: Two screens, Twice the fun

The ZTE Axon M won’t be considered a true foldable smartphone. It makes use of hinges instead in order to connect two displays. If you fold the device, the second display acts as the rear of the device. It’s only after unfolding it when you get to see the real beauty.

At 12mm, the ZTE Axon M is a pretty thick smartphone – a compromise you got to make for something new

The presence of two different displays makes the ZTE Axon M a pretty hefty device. As a matter of fact, it is one of the thickest smartphones in the market, something which a lot of potential buyers have to keep in mind.

Both the screens are LCD panels measuring 5.2-inches. Both offer a 1080p Full HD Display. The color reproduction is amazing and the screens look surprisingly sharp. If you unfold the device, you get a diagonal 6.8-inches display which offers a resolution of 1920 x 2160 pixels.

You can either use the merged screen as a tablet or you can mirror one screen over the other. ZTE has managed to keep everything buttery fluid in its UI. As a matter of fact, there are four different modes in which you can operate the ZTE Axon M:

  • Mirror mode: Allows the user to mirror the same content on both the screens in different directions. This could come in handy if someone wants to share some media with someone sitting at the opposite side of the table.
  • Dual mode: Allows the user to run two different apps on two screens. Because of this, ZTE has decided to let go of the dual apps which is a native feature in Android as of late.
  • Extended mode: Allows the user to use the device as one big smartphone or one compact tablet.
  • Traditional mode: Allows the user to use the smartphone as, well, a smartphone.

Because of the fact that the device is foldable, ZTE has made use of just a single camera which acts as both the front and the rear camera according to the screen which is being used.

To make the device work in all the four modes, the app developers would have to make some tweaks in the apps in terms of the aspect ratios. ZTE, however, has managed to deal with this feat as the apps get scaled natively in the ZTE Axon M.

The fingerprint scanner is embedded in the power button, something which a lot of us would love. ZTE did not seem to have much of a choice here taking into consideration the design of the smartphone.

The 3,180 mAH battery offers quick charge and might seem decent enough, but will it be able to hold two giant screens for long? How well does the battery actually perform is yet to be seen.

The device currently runs on Android Nougat and whether or not it will be updated is rather unclear.

Foldable smartphones could very well be the future of Android and ZTE has tried to leave no stone unturned to make that a reality. That being said, there are certain shortcomings which could be taken care of in the further generations of the device. Shortcomings like the presence of a much smaller battery and a thick form factor are something which one can’t just simply ignore. That being said, if you are on a hunt for a unique Android smartphone, the ZTE Axon M might just be the right choice for you.
