[Exclusive]: LG is working on launching an under-display camera smartphone

Under-display fingerprint scanners are no more a new feature. It is now time for the under-display front cameras to rise and shine.

A couple of weeks ago, we got to know that Samsung is working on launching a smartphone with an under-display front camera. Soon after that, reports suggesting that Oppo is also working on a similar smartphone of its own popped up on the internet. Now, a new report has come up courtesy of Letsgodigital which suggests that LG is also going to launch a new smartphone of the same feature pretty soon. As a matter of fact, the company has already filed the patents for the same.

The design patents have been applied for the company’s home country South Korea at the KIPO (Korean Intellectual Property Office) by LG Display and were published on 24 October and 2 November 2018. It involves two different smartphone designs, both with a near-borderless screen.

With one model, the display on the right side of the screen is slanted, making the device on the right thinner than on the left. The second design is a straight model with rounded corners. In both cases, a flexible display is used.

In the display, there is an oval hole at the top for the selfie camera, which is made of a transparent material. This oval hole can be placed at different locations; in the middle, but also in the left or right top.

The patent does not clarify the reason why an oval hole is chosen, so two cameras can be placed under the screen. The aim of this innovation is clear, by placing the camera under the display, a virtually 100% screen surface can be realized.

As of now, there is no word on the official name, pricing, and the release date of the device.
