Samsung announces Bixby 2.0: Open to third-party developers and provides smart home support

Samsung after launching Bixby on the Galaxy S8, has announced a second-generation version of its digital voice assistant: Bixby 2.0

The new Bixby 2.0 will be open to developers in a move to put the personal assistant on more devices, the company announced at its Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) 2017 in San Francisco.

Giving hints of positioning Bixby as even more of a competitor to Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant, both of which are racing to lock consumers into their own respective hardware and software ecosystems.

Bixby 2.0 will be ubiquitous, available on any and all devices,” said Eui-Suk Chung, Samsung executive vice president.

Bixby 2.0 will be more personal, with enhanced natural language capabilities for more natural commands and complex processing, so it can really get to know and understand not only who you are, but who members of your family are and tailor its response and actions.

Chung said, “Today’s assistants are useful, but ultimately they still play a limited role in people’s lives. People use them to set timers and reminders, answer trivial questions, etc. We see a world where digital assistants play a bigger role, an intelligent role, where one day everything from our phones to our fridge, to our sprinkler system will have some sort of intelligence to help us seamlessly interact with all the technology we use each day”.

Samsung’s new Bixby software development kit will be open to developers in beta. The company is also launching Bixby on Samsung TVs starting in the US and Korea.
